About LaBS
Laboratory for Banking Studies (LaBS) was set up as an independent unit in January 2024. LaBS was a part of the Center for Institutional Studies (CInSt) from 2005 till 2023, and in 2024 as a result of the CInSt reorganization, it became a separate research unit within the Faculty of Economic Studies of the HSE University. It pursues the general goal of becoming a globally recognized and acknowledged center for empirical research in banking and household finance.
We aim on identifying and analyzing economic and institutional determinants of banking markets’ (including payment instruments markets’) dynamics especially during periods of economic turbulence, and also on determining the efficient regulatory practices that would lead to their stable functioning and development.
The current portfolio of LaBS research projects and research interests of its members include:
- Development of banking services markets in Russian regions and identifying disproportions of such development and its determinants;
- Cross-country analysis of the efficiency of regulatory practices and variability of regulatory practices and their influence on banking services markets, main characteristics of banks, and their financial results;
- Cross-country analysis of the effect of non-financial institutional factors and characteristics on the strategies of main market participants, market structure, banks characteristics and their financial results;
- Analysis of households’ financial strategies from the point of view of financial inclusion, demand for banks’ products payment instruments, choice of savings strategies, credit discipline, etc.
Our mission is in
- high-quality research in banking and household finance
- encouraging and inspiring HSE students to participate in teaching and research within LaBS
- promoting of LaBS research results at high-quality international and local conferences and workshops
- introduction of LaBS research results into teaching process at HSE and promoting the practical application of these results
- initiating and promotion of cooperation in research and other academic activities with Russian, foreign, and international universities and organizations focusing on the same topics
